Former Liberal city manager Russell “Rusty” Varnado was arrested by Seward County deputies on November 19, following a KBI investigation into allegations of rape, sexual battery, and lewd conduct occurring between March and August 2024. He had been fired from his position prior to his arrest. The investigation continues.

Adriana Rosales, a 33-year-old Liberal woman, tragically died in a rollover accident on October 28, 2024. Authorities noted she was not wearing a seatbelt during the incident.

A fatal accident in Seward County involved 15-year-old Emilee Megan Grace Hamilton, who died after her Chevy 1500 collided with a semi driven by James Campbell Bailey. The incident occurred after Hamilton failed to yield at a stop sign. She was wearing a seatbelt, while Bailey sustained no injuries.
