Dangerous Fire Conditions Prompt Watch for Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa This Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Fire Weather Watch across broad sections of Nebraska, north-central Kansas, and southwest Iowa, warning residents of potentially critical fire weather conditions expected later this week.

The watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. Meteorologists from both the Hastings and Omaha/Valley NWS offices caution that a combination of gusty southwest winds and extremely low relative humidity will create an environment where any fires that develop could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Authorities are strongly advising against any outdoor burning during this period.

Expected Conditions

The dangerous conditions are being driven by a dry, windy weather pattern moving into the region:

  • South-Central Nebraska & North-Central Kansas: Residents can expect strong southwest winds sustained at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are forecast to plummet to as low as 15%.
  • Eastern Nebraska & Southwest Iowa: Southwest winds will hold steady between 15 and 25 mph, but sudden gusts could reach up to 40 mph. Humidity levels in these areas will drop to around 20%.

The alert covers dozens of counties across the three states, essentially putting the entire eastern half of Nebraska, along with bordering regions, on high alert.

  • In Kansas: Counties including Phillips, Smith, Jewell, Rooks, Osborne, and Mitchell.
  • In Nebraska: Major population centers and rural areas alike, encompassing Douglas, Sarpy, Lancaster, Cass, Buffalo, Hall, Adams, and Dawson counties, among many others.
  • In Iowa: Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, Page, and Harrison counties.

What Residents Should Do

A Fire Weather Watch indicates that critical fire weather conditions are highly likely to occur. The NWS is urging residents to monitor local forecasts closely over the coming days. If conditions worsen or persist as predicted, these watches may be upgraded to Red Flag Warnings.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that could produce a spark, safely dispose of all cigarettes, and secure any loose outdoor equipment that could create friction or sparks in the high winds.
