MISSION, Kan. — The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating an early morning shootout between a burglary suspect and police outside a Mission Target store on Sunday.
According to law enforcement, officers were dispatched to the Target located at 6100 Broadmoor Street just after 4:30 a.m. following reports of a burglary in progress. Responding units quickly moved to establish a perimeter around the front and rear of the building.
Shortly after their arrival, an officer spotted an individual carrying duffle bags near the back of the store. When the officer confronted the suspect, the individual fled on foot, prompting a chase.
During the pursuit, the suspect produced a handgun and discharged multiple rounds at the pursuing officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
Police on the scene immediately rendered first aid before the suspect was transported to a local hospital. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect’s injuries are non-life-threatening and that no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Investigators noted that the Target store is one of multiple crime scenes connected to the incident, though no additional details have been released.
