PARSONS, KS – A 31-year-old man is in custody after attempting to kidnap a newborn baby from Labette Health in Parsons on Tuesday evening, according to the Parsons Police Department.
Eric Matthews was arrested after hospital security intervened and prevented him from leaving the hospital with a one-day-old infant. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when police responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping in progress.
Officers arriving at the scene learned that hospital security had detained Matthews after he attempted to remove the newborn from the Obstetrics Ward without authorization. Video surveillance and witness interviews confirmed that Matthews had tried to leave with the infant.
According to reports, a family member of the child confronted Matthews before he could exit the ward, stopping him from taking the baby. Hospital security then secured Matthews until police arrived.
The investigation revealed that Matthews was known to the family and has a reported history of drug use. He was transported to the Parsons Police Department’s lock-up facility and booked on requested charges of Kidnapping and Child Endangerment.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks praised the swift actions of both hospital staff and law enforcement. “We are incredibly fortunate that this incident was resolved peacefully and without harm to the child. The quick response from Labette Health security staff played a crucial role in ensuring the infant’s safety,” Chief Spinks stated in a media release. “These situations can be unpredictable and volatile, but thanks to the diligence of those involved, this matter was contained before it could escalate further. We now allow the Labette County judicial system to proceed with the case and ensure justice is served.”
