Suspect Identified in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting at De Soto Panasonic Plant

DE SOTO, Kan. — Authorities have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting Friday morning at the Panasonic battery facility as Jonathan Lunceford, 55, of Blue Springs, Missouri. The incident, which began as a reported stabbing, left one victim in critical condition and a heavy law enforcement presence at the newly opened plant.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office released the details following a preliminary investigation into the violent encounter that unfolded just before 11:00 a.m. on December 12.

Multi-Agency Investigation Underway

The Panasonic plant—the largest electric vehicle battery plant in the United States—was briefly evacuated and shut down during the incident. Panasonic officials confirmed there was no “active shooter” threat and that the situation was contained to a specific area of the facility.

“The situation is contained and there is no active threat to the public,” the Sheriff’s Office stated via social media shortly after the shooting.

No deputies or officers from the responding agencies, which included the Johnson County Park Police, were injured during the confrontation.

Following standard protocol, the Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigations Team has taken over the case. The Olathe Police Department is acting as the lead investigative agency, with assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

Investigators have not yet clarified the relationship between Lunceford and the victim, or whether either man was an employee or contractor at the facility.
