Rays Sweep Royals Behind Baz’s Gem, Close Gap on Yankees

KANSAS CITY – The Tampa Bay Rays completed a dominant three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, securing a 4-0 victory fueled by a stellar pitching performance from Shane Baz and timely hitting from Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero. The win propels the Rays to a season-high 11 games above .500 (46-35) and puts them just a half-game behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

Baz (8-3) was the undisputed star of the night, delivering a career-best eight shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out nine and walking one. This impressive outing extended the Rays’ starting pitchers’ consecutive scoreless innings streak to 22 2/3.

The Rays’ offense broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Jonathan Aranda started the rally with a two-out double off Royals starter Michael Lorenzen (4-8), followed by a run-scoring triple from Jake Mangum. Josh Lowe then added an RBI single to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead.

The lead was extended in the sixth inning when Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero launched back-to-back home runs, pushing the score to 4-0. Jacob Lowe also contributed significantly to the Rays’ offense with three hits on the night.

The Royals, meanwhile, continued their offensive struggles, being shut out for the second consecutive game and scoring only one run in the entire three-game series against the Rays. Their recent slide has seen them go 14-27 (.341) since a strong 24-16 start to the season, marking the third-worst record in the majors over that span.

Despite a valiant effort in the ninth by the Royals, loading the bases with singles from Jonathan India and Vinnie Pasquantino off Paul Gervase, Pete Fairbanks entered with one out and sealed his 15th save by inducing a 6-4-3 double play from Maikel Garcia.

Looking ahead, the Royals will aim to turn their fortunes around as Noah Cameron (2-3, 2.08) takes the mound against right-hander Dustin May (4-5, 4.46) of the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Pregame coverage on SuperStar Country 102.5 FM & 1530 AM KQNK begins at 6:30 PM with first pitch from Kauffman Stadium at 7:10 PM.
