The Kansas City Current (7-5-0, 21 pts., 4th place) closed the month of May on a high-note, riding a second-half goal from forward Temwa Chawinga to notch a 1-0 victory over NWSL expansion side Boston Legacy FC (2-7-3, 9 pts., 14th place) Saturday at CPKC Stadium. After a stalemate through 45 minutes, Chawinga put Kansas City ahead with an emphatic second-chance finish in the 69th minute as a stout Current defense notched its third shutout victory of the 2026 campaign.
Kansas City extended its home unbeaten run to 23 consecutive matches (20-0-3), setting a new NWSL record. The club also extended its own league record consecutive regular season home win streak to 10. The Current is now an unblemished 6-0-0 at CPKC Stadium this year as the only team without a loss or draw at home.
“It’s important to note our fans that show up again. I mention every time, because it has to be at the front of our brains that everything we do is for our fans that show up. We never take that lightly,” said head coach Chris Armas. “It’s a win for us, which was important. It was a shutout. We want to carry momentum into the break and see our national team players go and do their thing. Real positive feelings around the club. Really important win. Another shutout on the season, and we’re going to keep this thing going.”
Both sides traded looks throughout the opening half. Boston recorded the first shot on target in the 14th minute, but Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena made the save. Chawinga and forward Michelle Cooper – who, in the 27th minute, became the sixth player in club history to reach 5,000 regular season minutes – combined in the 22nd minute, resulting in Cooper sending an effort just over the crossbar. Midfielder Bayley Feist slipped a ball through the box five minutes later for Chawinga whose shot was deflected, allowing Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy to push the ball away. Ultimately, the match entered halftime knotted at zero.
Kansas City got its go-ahead goal in the 69th minute off a quick-strike counterattack, ignited by defender Izzy Rodriguez darting forward to win a loose ball in the attacking third. Her interception found midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta, who flicked the ball forward for Bethune. Racing towards goal, Bethune weaved around multiple defenders before firing a shot from near the penalty spot that Murphy met with a diving save. The ensuing loose ball fell for Chawinga, who saw her first attempt saved off the line by a defender before nailing the second-chance effort into the center of the net.
The goal was Chawinga’s seventh of the season, all which have come in the last five matches. She now sits second in the Golden Boot race with a total of seven goals and two assists. It also marked her 27th regular season goal at CPKC Stadium, the second highest total by any NWSL player at any venue in league history, trailing only Christine Sinclair (41 at Providence Park).
Chawinga’s goal provided more than enough cushion for a Kansas City defense that locked down the visitors in the second half, not allowing a shot for the final 34 minutes of the match.
Saturday’s win extended the Current’s regular season home unbeaten streak to 23 matches, now the longest run in NWSL history. The streak began Sept. 7, 2024, and the Current has posted a 20-0-3 record across that span. Additionally, the Current has earned 13 shutouts during the streak and has outscored opponents 52-11. The victory also extended the Current’s league-record home winning streak to 10 consecutive matches, adding to a record the club set in last weekend’s victory over Portland.
The shutout was Kansas City’s 28th regular season shutout since the beginning of 2024, the most by any team in that span, and the 15th at CPKC Stadium. The latter is tied with Portland (15 at Providence Park) for the most in the league during that timeframe. It was also the 17th shutout for Lorena since the start of 2025, the second highest during that span.
Kansas City returns to action on Friday, June 26, in the NWSL Challenge Cup, presented by e.l.f., against Gotham FC at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio. The match between the 2025 NWSL Shield Winners and 2025 NWSL Champions is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT and will broadcast nationally on Prime Video.
