KANSAS CITY – The Cleveland Guardians utilized a balanced offensive attack and timely power hitting to defeat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Thursday, ensuring a split of their four-game series. Every starter in the Cleveland lineup recorded at least one hit as the team continued its dominance over American League Central rivals.
Early Offensive Surge
The Guardians wasted no time attacking Royals starter Seth Lugo. In a three-run first inning, Cleveland racked up five hits, punctuated by Kyle Manzardo’s two-run double off the right-center wall.
The lead grew in the third when Petey Halpin drove in his first career RBI with a single. Halpin remained active on the basepaths throughout the afternoon, later walking and stealing second in the sixth inning before scoring on a passed ball to make it 5-1.
Naylor Provides the Cushion
While the Royals attempted to claw back, Bo Naylor delivered the definitive blow in the seventh inning. Naylor launched a three-run home run into the right-field bullpen, providing the Guardians with the necessary breathing room to withstand a late Kansas City rally.
Pitching and Defense
Slade Cecconi (2-4) earned the win, navigating through 5 1/3 innings. Despite facing several high-pressure situations, Cecconi limited the damage to two runs on six hits. The Royals struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving 10 runners on base—six of them in scoring position.
The Royals did find some late life against the Cleveland bullpen:
- Maikel Garcia put KC on the board with an RBI single in the fifth.
- Bobby Witt Jr. matched a career-high with four hits.
- Vinnie Pasquantino and Witt hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh.
However, the rally fell short as Cade Smith struck out two in the final frame to secure his 10th save of the season.
By The Numbers
The loss fell on Seth Lugo (1-2), who labored through 102 pitches in just four innings of work. The Royals’ pitching staff struggled with command all day, issuing eight walks and allowing a total of 20 base runners.
