PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. – June 28, 2025 – A Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy, Brandon Gaede, died Friday night following an officer-involved shooting in Phillipsburg. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The incident unfolded around 9:28 p.m. Friday when the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office received a report of illegal fireworks being detonated at 899 1st Street in Phillipsburg. A Phillips County deputy, initially identified as the Undersheriff by other agencies but later clarified by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office as not serving in that capacity at the time of his death, responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Kolton Griffith, who was believed to be responsible for the fireworks. During the encounter, the deputy developed probable cause to arrest Griffith. As the deputy attempted to place Griffith in handcuffs, a struggle ensued. Griffith reportedly pulled a concealed handgun and opened fire on the deputy.
Despite being struck by gunfire, Deputy Gaede returned fire, hitting Griffith multiple times. Griffith died at the scene.
Emergency medical services transported Deputy Gaede to a local hospital, where, despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) initially responded to the scene, but the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has been requested to lead the independent investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives from Sedgwick County are reviewing evidence and collecting statements from witnesses, medical staff, and others involved to determine the full sequence of events. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. The findings of the investigation will be submitted to the Phillips County Attorney.
Deputy Brandon Gaede is survived by his wife, Karlye, and their three young children. The community has quickly rallied to support his family. An account has been established at Farmers State Bank in Phillipsburg for donations. Additionally, the ‘Get Scooped’ ice cream shop in Phillipsburg announced it would donate half of its Saturday sales to benefit the Gaede children.
