A Phillips County Sheriff's Deputy, Brandon Gaede, was killed in an officer-involved shooting on June 28, 2025, in Phillipsburg. Suspect Kolton Griffith also died after opening fire during an attempted arrest for illegal fireworks. An investigation led by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office is ongoing, with community support for Gaede's family.

A fatal pedestrian accident occurred in Kiowa County, Kansas, involving a 2016 International semi-truck and 50-year-old Richard Hubbard. The truck, driven by Charles D. Cunningham, struck Hubbard as he crossed U.S. Highway 54. Hubbard, a resident of Phillipsburg, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while Cunningham escaped unharmed.

On February 14, 2021, a shooting in Phillipsburg led to the death of Janna Lea Constable. Kevin Lee Hadley was arrested on July 22 for second-degree murder, among other charges.
