Jordan Montgomery returned from a month-long layoff due to a knee injury and allowed only one run in five innings, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The 31-year-old left-hander, who signed a $25 million, one-year contract with the NL champions in March, had been sidelined since June 27 due to right knee inflammation. This win marked his first victory since June 21 at Philadelphia.
Ketel Marte played a key role in the Diamondbacks’ win, hitting a two-run homer and scoring three runs. Montgomery, with a record of 7-5, allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out two in his return. Bryce Jarvis, Joe Mantiply, Ryan Thompson, and Kevin Ginkel contributed to Arizona’s victory by pitching shutout innings.
The game also saw notable performances from Bobby Witt Jr., who ended his streak of four straight three-hit games with an RBI double in the first inning, and Salvador Perez, who had an RBI single in the ninth. Alec Marsh, the Royals’ pitcher, gave up five runs, five hits, and two walks in five innings. Marte’s two-run homer off the right-field foul pole in the fifth inning, following Geraldo Perdomo’s leadoff double, further solidified the Diamondbacks’ lead.
