The 21st Annual Celebration honoring Orphan Train Riders will take place from June 6 to June 7 at the museum in Concordia, Kansas. The 43rd annual Cloud County Community College Foundation Scholarship Auction, themed “Camp Cloud,” raised over $104,000. The funds directly support the General Scholarship Fund, expanding opportunities for students to attend college. With the help of volunteers and donors, the event’s success has contributed over $1.2 million to student scholarships.
Dierking Communications, Inc. invested in radio stations in north central Kansas, including KD Country 94 and Z-96.3 The Lake. The stations, under new ownership since 2006, have undergone technological upgrades led by General Manager Wade Gerstner. To celebrate 30 years of broadcasting, state-of-the-art transmitters are being installed to improve signal reliability and reception. Work is expected to be completed by the end of May.
On April 22nd, a high-speed pursuit spanning Clay and Washington counties involved a suspect vehicle reaching speeds over 100 mph, forcing vehicles off the road. Despite Stop Sticks being deployed in the Linn area, the vehicle evaded them and caused a patrol car accident. The pursuit ended with the suspect vehicle crashing, resulting in injuries to all three occupants. The driver, Robert D Allen, had a felony warrant from Washington State and is now in custody.
The Beloit USD 273 School Bond vote concluded with Question 1 for facility improvements at $16.2 million and Question 2 for additional upgrades at $3.8 million. Unofficial results show Question 1 received 823 "Yes" (37%) and 1,425 "No" (63%) votes, while Question 2 received 644 "Yes" (29%) and 1,597 "No" (71%) votes.

Cloud County Community College is introducing two new associate’s degree programs in Fall 2024. The first is an associate’s in PK-6 Elementary Education Pathway, guaranteeing transfer of 60 hours toward a bachelor’s degree. The second is an associate in Digital Entrepreneurship, offering diverse career opportunities. Enrollment for Fall 2024 is now open.
The Kansas KidWind Challenge state finals will take place in Salina, featuring 22 teams from 15 Kansas schools. Winners will advance to the World KidWind Challenge in Minneapolis, MN. The event promotes STEM education, engaging students in designing, building, and testing wind turbines while fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and public speaking skills.
Solomon Valley Community Foundation is launching Give to Grow, a one-day matching initiative to boost visibility and long-term endowment growth for local nonprofits. On April 24th, there will be a variety of activities at the Beloit Municipal Building, with over 20 nonprofits present. Contributions received during the event will be doubled, up to 100%, from a $25,000 match pool.
The Kansas Department of Transportation will start a mill and overlay project on 22.3 miles of U.S. 36 and K-128 in Jewell County on April 1. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes, as flaggers and a pilot car will direct one lane of traffic through the construction. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-July, weather permitting.
A Clay Center resident, David Dean, was in a three-vehicle collision north of Clay Center. Dean's SUV veered across the center line, colliding with a Dodge Caravan, then was hit by a semi. Dean, 64, sustained a serious injury and was taken to Clay County Medical Center. The others involved did not require hospitalization.
The Cloud County Community College Choirs will present a Dance Mix Concert on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in Cook Theatre.
