WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics continue their mid-season surge, securing a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday behind a balanced offensive attack and a historic performance from rookie Nick Kurtz. With this win, the A’s have now claimed six of their last nine contests.
Kurtz Joins the Legends
Nick Kurtz remained the center of attention as he drew a walk for his 19th consecutive game, tying Hall of Famer Ted Williams for the third-longest such streak in MLB history. He now trails only Roy Cullenbine (1947) and Barry Bonds (2002-03) for the all-time record.
Beyond his discipline at the plate, Kurtz provided the game’s decisive blow in a four-run second inning. He lined a 1-0 slider from Royals starter Noah Cameron into right-center for a two-run double, pushing the Athletics to a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Offensive Highlights
The Athletics’ lineup pressured Kansas City pitchers throughout the afternoon:
- Shea Langeliers: Led the charge with three doubles and an RBI.
- Darell Hernaiz: Collected three hits and drove in two runs.
- Jacob Wilson: Notched two hits and crossed the plate twice.
The Royals struggled to capitalize on their own opportunities. While Maikel Garcia and Starling Marte each turned in three-hit performances, the team left runners stranded in key moments. Elias Diaz provided a bright spot for Kansas City with his first home run of the season.
Pitching and Injuries
The A’s victory came with a minor scare, as starter Jeffrey Springs was forced to exit after just three innings (67 pitches) due to right hip soreness. However, the bullpen stepped up admirably:
- Luis Medina (1-1): Earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
- Jack Perkins: Secured his third save by inducing a game-ending flyout from pinch-hitter Vinnie Pasquantino, who was limited to a single plate appearance due to ongoing back tightness.
Noah Cameron (2-2) took the loss for the Royals, surrendering five runs (four earned) on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings.
