Extreme Heat Warning Issued Across Central and Eastern Kansas: Heat Index Could Reach 114°

TOPEKA, Kan. — The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for much of central, north-central, northeast, and east-central Kansas, as dangerous heat and stifling humidity combine to push heat index values up to 114°.

The warning remains in effect through 9:00 PM CDT on Monday, July 27.

What Areas Are Affected?

Central, North-Central, and Northeast Kansas

  • Cities Included: Manhattan, Junction City, Concordia, Hiawatha, Clay Center, Wamego, Seneca, Abilene, and surrounding communities.
  • Status: The Extreme Heat Watch previously set for later in the week has been canceled, but the Extreme Heat Warning remains active through Monday evening.
  • Expected Heat Index: Up to 112°.

East-Central Kansas (Topeka, Lawrence, & Surrounding Counties)

  • Counties Included: Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Osage, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson (including Topeka, Lawrence, Emporia, and Ottawa).
  • Status: An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through Monday at 9:00 PM CDT, followed immediately by an Extreme Heat Watch running through Tuesday evening.
  • Expected Heat Index: Up to 114° through Monday night, with heat indices remaining up to 105° through Tuesday evening.

Health Impacts & Warning Signs

Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat significantly increases the risk of severe heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone shows signs of heat stroke (high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, or hot/dry skin), move them to a cool place immediately and call 911.

  • Limit Outdoor Activity: Reschedule heavy outdoor tasks to early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are cooler.
  • Stay Cool & Hydrated: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Workplace Safety: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent, scheduled breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for outdoor workers.
  • Vehicle Safety: Never leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles. Interior temperatures can reach lethal levels in just a few minutes.
