ASHBURN, Va. — The son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested after allegedly shooting his mother on Sunday evening at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia, sources told ESPN.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was hospitalized with serious injuries after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and arm. She is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting call on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive at approximately 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday. Authorities subsequently arrested the couple’s son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy.
Elijah Bieniemy has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at a Loudoun County detention center.
Following the news, Eric Bieniemy departed Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, and was not present for the team’s Monday morning practice. Bieniemy recently rejoined Kansas City’s coaching staff as offensive coordinator, a role he previously held from 2018 to 2022.
The Kansas City Chiefs issued a brief statement acknowledging the situation, stating they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but declined to comment further out of respect for the family’s privacy.
