KANSAS CITY – Jonathan India delivered a definitive blow with a sixth-inning grand slam, driving in five runs to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 13-9 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.
On a night defined by persistent drizzle and a flurry of umpire challenges, the Royals’ offense exploded for 15 hits to overwhelm Twins starter Joe Ryan.
Offensive Fireworks
The Royals’ lineup found success early and often, particularly with two outs. The team went 7 for 16 with runners in scoring position, tallying eight of their 13 runs after the second out was recorded.
- Jonathan India: Highlighted a seven-run sixth inning with his fifth career grand slam, his first since joining the Royals.
- Kyle Isbel: Put together a perfect night at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a solo home run in the seventh and matching a career high in hits.
- Maikel Garcia & Jac Caglianone: Garcia drove in three runs, while Caglianone notched three hits and crossed the plate three times.
Strong Debut for Cameron
Left-hander Noah Cameron (1-0) made the most of his season debut, providing stability on the mound despite the damp conditions. Cameron tossed five solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five to earn the win.
In contrast, Twins ace and former All-Star Joe Ryan (0-1) struggled to find his rhythm. Ryan lasted only four innings, laboring through 77 pitches and surrendering five runs.
Late Rally and Tech Challenges
While Kansas City built a commanding 12-1 lead by the sixth, Minnesota refused to go quietly. The Twins surged for eight runs in the final three frames, fueled by a Luke Keaschall two-run double and a three-run blast from Josh Bell in the ninth. The comeback attempt fell short as Lucas Erceg entered to record the final two outs, securing his second save.
The game also served as a showcase for the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system. A total of 11 challenges were made to umpire Andy Fletcher’s strike zone. The Twins were remarkably efficient with the technology, going 8 for 9 in challenges—led by catcher Ryan Jeffers, who successfully overturned four calls during his plate appearances.
