Kansas Basketball Secures Top Guard Leroy Blyden Jr. from Toledo

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Guard Leroy Blyden Jr. has signed to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced today. Blyden will be a sophomore at Kansas after playing his last season at Toledo.

“We felt Leroy was one of the very best guard prospects in the portal, period,” Self said. “He had a great year at Toledo and was the freshman of the year in his league. He can score, he shoots it with range, and he’s efficient. He can be the lead guard and a scoring guard. His ability to make plays and get his shoulders past you is something we really need.”

Blyden, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, was the 2025-26 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Freshman of the Year where he led the league freshmen in scoring at 16.4 points per game. The Detroit native scored in double figures in 24 contests with 13 contests of 20 points or more, including a career-high 36 points against Western Michigan (12/30). Blyden had eight games with six or more assists, including a career-high 13 assists against Buffalo (3/6).

A 2026 All-MAC Third Team selection, Blyden ranked third in the league in steals per game at 1.8 and free throw percentage at 84.6 percent. He was seventh in the league with 2.3 threes made per game and a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio. Blyden’s 4.5 assists per game were eighth in the conference and his 16.4 points per game and 40.7 three-point field goal percentage ranked ninth in the MAC.

Blyden was named to the 2026 MAC All-Tournament Team where he averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.7 steals in three games as Toledo finished runner-up in the event.

Blyden played high school basketball at the University of Detroit Jesuit where he was a Michigan Mr. Basketball runner-up after averaging 21.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 2.3 steals per game as a senior.

Blyden is the second transfer to join the KU roster this spring, along with Keanu Dawes from Utah. The duo join a contingent of four KU men’s basketball signees from the fall including forward Davion Adkins, guard Luke Barnett, guard Taylen Kinney, and guard Trent Perry.
