Mayo’s Three-Run Blast Powers Orioles Past Royals, 8-3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Coby Mayo delivered his second three-run home run in as many days, highlighting a six-run sixth inning that lifted the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium.

Mayo’s towering 452-foot shot into the left-field bleachers above the fountains capped Baltimore’s decisive rally and marked his first two home runs of the season, more than doubling his RBI total to 10.

Pete Alonso also went deep for the Orioles, launching his third home run of the season — a two-run blast in the first inning that gave Baltimore an early lead.

On the mound, Chris Bassitt (1-2) earned his first win with Baltimore, allowing five runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. Anthony Nunez closed things out with a scoreless ninth to secure his first save.

Kansas City answered early with power of its own. Vinnie Pasquantino crushed a 422-foot home run in the first inning, while Carter Jensen added his team-leading sixth homer. Jensen also contributed an RBI single in the fourth, and Lane Thomas drove in another run to briefly give the Royals a 3-2 advantage.

However, Baltimore broke the game open in the sixth inning. Leody Taveras tied the game with an RBI single, followed by a two-run single from Jeremiah Jackson. After a hit by Colton Cowser, Mayo’s three-run homer put the game out of reach.

Royals starter Michael Wacha (2-1), who entered the game with a 1.00 ERA, struggled in the sixth and finished having allowed six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

With the win, Baltimore claimed two of three games in the series.

Kansas City continues its homestand Friday to host the Los Angeles Angels. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (0-2, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to start for Los Angeles, while the Royals are expected to counter with Noah Cameron (1-1, 5.40 ERA).
