Therapy Horses for Veterans Shot and Killed; Wabaunsee County Sheriff Launches ‘Homicide’ Investigation

ESKRIDGE, Kan. — The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help after two therapy horses were shot and killed over the weekend in what officials are describing as a “reprehensible atrocity.”

According to Sheriff Eric Kirsch, the horses were targeted from the road by an unknown assailant in the vicinity of Bradford and Mission Valley Road, northeast of Eskridge.

The loss is being felt deeply by the community, as the horses served a vital purpose: providing therapy for veterans and first responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

A Relentless Pursuit of Justice

Sheriff Kirsch emphasized that his department is committing all available investigative resources to find those responsible. In a strongly worded statement, the Sheriff’s Office vowed a “relentless pursuit and capture” of the perpetrators who targeted the “beautiful, innocent and defenseless animals.”

The investigation is being handled with extraordinary gravity. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are treating the case with the same procedural intensity as a homicide.

Forensic Investigation Underway

The remains of the two horses have been transported to Kansas State University for a full forensic examination to gather evidence that may lead to the shooter.

As the search for the assailant continues, the Sheriff’s Office has pledged a $500 reward for any information that leads to a lawful arrest and conviction.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or vehicles in the area of Bradford and Mission Valley Road over the weekend to contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
