Two Arrested After 41 Animals Rescued From Unsanitary Emporia Residence

LYON COUNTY, Kan. — Two individuals are facing animal cruelty and neglect charges after law enforcement officers rescued more than 40 animals from an Emporia home on Wednesday.

On September 2, 2026, Animal Control Officers and Patrol Officers with the Emporia Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence located at 621 Lakeview St., Lot 14. The action was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected animal abuse and neglect in the area, according to a media release from the department.

Upon searching the property, officers discovered dozens of animals living in severe unsanitary and unhealthy conditions. In total, authorities removed 10 cats and 31 dogs from the residence.

Following the search, law enforcement arrested 44-year-old Matthew Carver and 37-year-old Sarah Carver in connection with the case. Both individuals are currently facing charges related to animal cruelty and neglect.

The investigation remains ongoing by local law enforcement.
