STOCKTON, Kan. – A magnitude 2.8 earthquake was felt in parts of northwest Kansas Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The small earthquake struck just before 3:00 p.m. local time, centered approximately four miles north of Stockton. The quake was measured at a depth of 12.3 kilometers (7.6 miles) underground.
While no damage was reported, the shaking was felt by residents in the area. As of 6:00 p.m. Sunday, the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system had received nine reports from people in and around Stockton, with three additional reports coming from northern Rooks and southern Phillips counties.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor and are often felt by people close to the epicenter but rarely cause significant damage. The region, though not as seismically active as the West Coast, does experience occasional minor tremors.
