Tarik Skubal’s dominant performance led the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals, securing a series sweep and moving within a half-game of a playoff spot.
Riley Greene’s go-ahead home run propelled the Tigers to their fourth consecutive win and ninth in their last 11 games. With this victory, Detroit narrowed the gap to Minnesota for the third AL wild-card spot to just a half-game.
Skubal, who has won his last five decisions, further solidified his case for the AL Cy Young Award. His stellar outing lowered his AL-leading ERA to 2.48. Skubal faced challenges early in the game but persevered, ultimately striking out Royals All-Star catcher Salvador Perez.
The Royals suffered their first home sweep of the season, falling 2 1/2 games behind Baltimore for the first wild-card spot and maintaining a 1 1/2-game lead over Minnesota for the second wild card.
Skubal’s dominance extended to facing Bobby Witt Jr., a prominent figure in the Royals’ lineup. Witt, known for his impressive offensive achievements, was twice struck out by Skubal before being hit by a pitch.
The Royals’ offense was led by Perez and Gurriel, who contributed two hits each. However, the Tigers’ strong pitching and timely hitting ultimately proved decisive in securing the series sweep.
