TOPEKA, Kan. — Following a recent meeting of the Kansas Board of Regents, Fort Hays State University (FHSU) has announced an updated tuition and fee structure for the 2026-2027 academic year. Despite a modest increase designed to counter inflation and reductions in state funding, the university successfully maintains its long-standing position as the most financially accessible four-year institution in the state.
University leadership emphasized a focus on a sustainable, low-dollar adjustment rather than steep hikes, ensuring that FHSU students continue to receive a high-quality education and strong campus support services without facing a major financial burden.
Key Financial Breakdown
While percentage increases can often sound alarming, FHSU officials highlighted that the actual dollar-amount change remains low. For the upcoming academic year, resident undergraduate students will see the following adjustments:
- Tuition Adjustment: An increase of $9.78 per credit hour.
- Total Semester Impact: The total adjustment, which factors in both tuition and required fees, will amount to less than $145 per semester for a full-time resident undergraduate student.
According to published rates from the Kansas Board of Regents, FHSU’s total cost for a standard 15-credit-hour semester remains significantly lower than its peer institutions across the state. Specifically, FHSU is:
- 10% less expensive than Emporia State University
- 17% less expensive than Pittsburg State University
- 37% less expensive than Wichita State University
- 48% less expensive than Kansas State University
- 51% less expensive than the University of Kansas
Investing in the Student Journey
University leaders noted that the additional revenue will be directly reinvested into classroom resources, student career services, and the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty and staff.
“Our priority remains keeping costs as low as possible for our Fort Hays State families,” FHSU President Dr. Tisa Mason said in a statement. “These rates ensure that our university can continue to help students succeed in the classroom and in their careers after graduation.”
By balancing fiscal responsibility with modern facilities and robust student experiences, FHSU officials state the university continues to set the standard for affordable, high-quality higher education in the region.
