MJ Melendez came through with a clutch pinch-hit three-run home run during the ninth inning, propelling the Kansas City Royals to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Royals were down 2-0 as they entered the final inning, but Hunter Renfroe and Freddy Fermin managed to get on base with singles, setting the stage for Melendez’s heroics. Although Adam Frazier’s pinch-hit attempt almost resulted in a home run, it ultimately went foul, he would eventually fly out to center field.
Melendez’s impressive 362-foot blast marked his 13th home run of the season and completely shifted the momentum in favor of Kansas City. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch strategically deployed lefty Shelby Miller in the ninth inning to counter the Royals’ left-handed hitters, but Melendez’s timely hit proved to be the difference-maker. Chris Stratton secured the win with a scoreless eighth inning, while Hunter Harvey, seeking redemption after a tough outing the day before, closed out the game with his first save of the season.
Following this exciting victory, the Royals have now emerged victorious in six of their last seven games, showcasing their resilience and determination on the field. On the other hand, the Tigers concluded a challenging nine-game homestand with a 2-7 record against tough opponents like Minnesota, Cleveland, and Kansas City.
On Monday, the Kansas City Royals will commence a 3-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium. Brady Singer, with a record of 8-6 and an ERA of 2.88, will be the starting pitcher for Kansas City, while James Paxton, with a record of 8-3 and an ERA of 4.52, will take the mound for the Red Sox. The first pitch is set for 7:10 p.m., and pregame coverage will be available on SuperStar Country 102.5 & 1530 AM starting at 6:30 p.m.
