In Saturday night’s game, Michael Wacha delivered an impressive performance on the mound for the Kansas City Royals. He threw seven innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight batters and allowing only one runner to advance past first base. This outstanding outing contributed to the Royals’ success, as their pitchers have now recorded the most quality starts in the majors with eight.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when MJ Melendez stepped up to the plate. With a 30 mph crosswind, Melendez connected with Chris Flexen’s first-pitch fastball, sending it soaring to straightaway center field. The ball grazed the top of the fence, seemingly tipped by center fielder Dominic Fletcher, before sailing over for Melendez’s second home run of the year and second in three games. This pivotal hit broke the tie and gave the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Following Melendez’s home run, the Royals continued to capitalize on their offensive opportunities. Maikel Garcia added another run to the scoreboard with an infield single as Kansas City batted around in the inning. Flexen, the White Sox pitcher, had a solid outing overall, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. However, it wasn’t enough to secure a victory for Chicago.
The Royals’ strong pitching and timely hitting propelled them to a 3-0 victory over the struggling Chicago White Sox. With this win, Kansas City improved to a 5-4 record, surpassing the .500 mark for the first time since April 9, 2022. On the other hand, the White Sox fell to a 1-7 record and were shut out for the third time this season. They have scored a total of only 13 runs through their first eight games, their lowest tally since 1968. The next game will feature a matchup between White Sox left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet and Royals right-handed pitcher Alec Marsh.
