CHICAGO — Rookie catcher Carter Jensen extended his historic, franchise-record hitting streak to 19 games, while a flawless Kansas City bullpen combined for five shutout innings to lift the Royals to a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon.
The win snaps a grueling four-game losing streak for the Royals (35-50), who narrowly avoided their seventh series sweep of the season after being outscored 24-2 in the first two games at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Jensen’s Historic Chase Continues
Jensen spearheaded the Royals’ offense, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs. His 19-game hitting streak is currently the longest active streak in Major League Baseball and marks the longest by an American League rookie since the 2014 season.
He didn’t waste any time keeping history alive. In the top of the first inning, Jensen lined an RBI single to score Lane Thomas, quickly putting Kansas City on the board and lengthening his historic run.
The White Sox answered immediately in the bottom half. Miguel Vargas launched his 19th home run of the year—a 407-foot, two-run blast into a stiff left-field breeze—to briefly give Chicago the lead. Vargas would finish the day with a home run and a double for the Sox (43-39).
Back-and-Forth Action
The early frames developed into a chaotic slugfest:
- Top 2nd: Lane Thomas drove home Zack Collins with an RBI single, followed by a Bobby Witt Jr. sacrifice fly that brought home Tyler Tolbert, pulling the Royals ahead 3-2.
- Bottom 2nd: Chicago’s Kyle Teel fought off a pitch for a two-run, broken-bat single to left, flipping the lead back to the White Sox, 4-3.
- Top 3rd: Collins chipped in again, dropping a bloop double into no-man’s land to knot the game up at 4-4.
Jensen then provided the game’s defining moment in the top of the fourth. Lacing a sharp double into the right-field corner, he drove in the go-ahead run to put the Royals up 5-4. The hit chased White Sox starter Anthony Kay (6-3), handing him his first home loss of the season (5-1) after lasting just 3 2/3 innings.
Bullpen Slams the Door
After Royals starter Luinder Avila surrendered four runs over four innings, the spotlight shifted to a Kansas City bullpen that has struggled mightily this year, carrying an MLB-high 22 blown-lead losses into Sunday.
This time, the relief corps was utterly impenetrable.

Steven Cruz (2-2) earned the victory with his relief appearance, while Beck Way, Lucas Erceg, and Matt Strahm flawlessly bridged the gap to the ninth. Closer Alex Lange capably locked things down, pitching a perfect ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season and seal the 5-4 win.
With the victory, the White Sox drop to 17-10 in one-run games this year.
