MONROE, La. – The “Voice of the Warhawks,” Mike Hammett, was named the winner of the College Sports Radio Play-by-Play Award at the Louisiana Sports Writers Association annual awards brunch on Sunday (June 28).
It is Hammett’s first win in the LSWA college radio play-by-play contest after finishing second to LSU’s Chris Blair in each of the last three years.
The judge for the contest said of the winning entry: “Mike is consistently a pro’s pro. He does a great job of capturing why the big moment is in fact the big moment. Mike also does a tremendous job of crunching a large amount of information into a small window without feeling rushed, but also making sure he gives his on-air partner plenty of time to break down a play. Mike is incredibly descriptive while note being too wordy, and excited for the big plays without coming across fanatical. Mike is well-deserving of this recognition.”
Hammett is preparing for his fifth season as the “Voice of the Warhawks” and ninth year with the Warhawk Radio Network in 2026-27. His winning entry was his call of the ULM football victory at UTEP on September 20, 2025. He submitted a clip that included the Warhawks’ goal-line stand on the opening drive of the game, followed by the subsequent three play, 96-yard touchdown drive that set the tone in the 31-25 win over the Miners inside the Sun Bowl.
“There are some great college play-by-play voices in Louisiana, and to be selected as the best in the state is a humbling honor,” Hammett said. “I always tell our broadcast crew this is a team award. Our broadcast is as sharp as it is because of the work of analyst Mike McGee, sideline reporter Chase Regian, host Josh McGehee and especially our engineer Cory Crowe, who makes us sound great on the air.”
Hammett and the rest of the Warhawk Radio Network crew will begin the 2026-27 year with the broadcast of ULM football at Mississippi State on Sept. 5.
