Sporting KC Falls 2-1 At Atlanta United

By Patrik Bergabo – Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City (4-14-3, 15 pts.) fell to a 2-1 defeat against Atlanta United (6-12-3, 21 pts.) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday night. Sporting was undone by two first half goals from Tomas Jacob and Fafa Picault before dominating the second half and cutting the deficit through Stephen Afrifa.

Head coach Raphael Wicky made two changes to the lineup after Wednesday’s draw with St. Louis, as Moises Mosquera returned from suspension to replace Jansen Miller at centerback, while Shapi Suleymanov replaced Dejan Joveljic up front.

Sporting started well and fashioned an opening in the fourth minute when Suleymanov slipped Capita Capemba free inside the area and the Angolan’s clipped attempt to the far post was headed off the line by Atlanta’s Paulo Diaz.

Atlanta took the lead in the 13th minute when Tomas Jacob slammed the ball home from close range after nice work from star winger Miguel Almiron down the left wing, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Atlanta had another chance in the 19th minute when Almiron again broke free down the left but this time Stefan Cleveland was equal to his low strike.

Sporting almost pulled themselves level in the 20th minute when Lasse Berg Johnsen picked out Calvin Harris with a brilliant pass over the top and the Englishman cut inside on to his right foot but sent his effort narrowly over the bar.

Moments after Jake Davis did well to head an Atlanta free kick onto his own crossbar, the hosts doubled their lead when Fafa Picault diverted home on the doorstep off the ensuing corner.

Sporting pushed in the second half to get back into the game and pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when substitute Stephen Afrifa rifled the ball into the side-netting from a tight angle for his second goal of the season to make the score 2-1.

The visitors continued to pile forward in search of an equalizer with the best chance falling to Mosquera in second-half stoppage time, but his towering header off Suleymanov’s corner kick flew inches over the bar as Sporting succumbed to defeat on the road.

Sporting returns home next weekend to host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night at Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on Apple TV, while the game will be air on the radio on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM. Tickets are available via SeatGeek.
