Sporting KC Trades Dejan Joveljic To Seattle Sounders In Exchange For $6 Million In Cash

By Patrik Bergabo – Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City has traded forward Dejan Joveljic to the Seattle Sounders in exchange for $6 million in cash, the club announced today. Joveljic will no longer occupy a Designated Player slot on Sporting KC’s roster.

“We would like to thank Dejan for his contributions to Sporting KC,” President of Soccer Operations & GM David Lee said. “While it is always very challenging to lose a player of Dejan’s quality, we have to make decisions weighing up potential impact in the short-term alongside the long-term vision for consistent and sustainable success. Completing a cash-for-player trade allows us to convert a substantial amount of the fee into General Allocation Money, which is a critical component to increase our budget to spend across our entire roster.

“It is imperative that we return the club to competing for trophies as quickly as possible, and the resources acquired from this transaction, coupled with now having two open DP slots, will help us reinvest in the roster and maximize our competitiveness for years to come.”

Joveljic joined Sporting in a $4 million cash trade on Feb. 1, 2025 after helping the LA Galaxy win the 2024 MLS Cup and went on to record 26 goals and five assists in 55 matches across all competitions for the club.

Sporting returns home this weekend when the team takes on the Vancouver Whitecaps at Sporting Park on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on Apple TV, while Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM will carry the game locally on the radio. Tickets are available via SeatGeek.
