Sporting Falls To Defeat Versus Vancouver

Sporting Kansas City (4-15-3, 15 pts.) fell to a 3-0 defeat against the Vancouver Whitecaps (13-4-4, 43 pts.) at Sporting Park on Saturday night. First-place Vancouver got goals either side of halftime from Thomas Muller, Brian White and Rayan Elloumi to seal the victory.

Head coach Raphael Wicky made three changes to the lineup following Sundays’ defeat in Atlanta, as Or Blorian returned from injury to replace Wyatt Meyer, while Justin Reynolds and Jacob Bartlett checked in for injured duo Jake Davis and Zorhan Bassong.

After an even opening, Sporting fashioned the team’s first opening in the 14^th minute when Blorian went on an adventurous foray forward, dribbling past several Whitecaps players before dragging his shot wide from 20 yards.

Vancouver almost took the lead in the 26^th minute when the Whitecaps built through midfield to find Edier Ocampo on the right wing, and his low crossed flew through a crowd of bodies before ricocheting off the inside of the post and away.

The visitors were gifted the lead from the penalty spot in the 40^th minute when Reynolds was adjudged to have brought down Bruno Caicedo in the box, with German legend Muller stepping up to dispatch the spot kick.

The ‘Caps almost added a second on the stroke of halftime when leading scorer White sent a free header off the post after connecting with a cross from the lively Caicedo.

Vancouver doubled their lead shortly after the restart when White, after getting away with a push in the area, provided an impudent back-heel finish off the recycled cross to put Sporting into a 2-0 hole.

Sporting introduced record-signing Andre Luiz for his debut in the 66^th minute when the Brazilian winger replaced Shapi Suleymanov. Andre got involved immediately, dispossessing a Vancouver player and winning a free kick after splitting a pair of ‘Caps defenders.

Moments after Vancouver substitute Elloumi saw a strike deflected onto the post, the young forward put an exclamation point on the victory as he slammed home from Muller’s cross to make the final score 3-0.

Sporting is back on the road next weekend when the team flies south to Texas to take on FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on Apple TV, while the game will be air on the radio on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
