KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The bats came alive in spectacular fashion at Kauffman Stadium on Monday as the Kansas City Royals completely dismantled the Philadelphia Phillies in a resounding 15-1 victory, tagging ace Cristopher Sánchez for a career-worst nine earned runs.
The Royals, who entered the contest holding the second-worst record in baseball at 36-54, looked like a championship juggernaut against the high-flying Phillies. Kansas City scored in every single inning, pounding out a season-high 15 runs on a relentless 22-hit barrage.
A Historic Night for Tolbert and Perez
Leading the charge for the Royals was Tyler Tolbert, who put together his first career five-hit game. It marked the first time a Royals player recorded five hits in a single game since the 2022 season. Tolbert capped his historic night with a home run, joining Salvador Perez, Luke Maile, and Lane Thomas in a multi-homer parade.
Perez’s contribution carried significant franchise weight. The veteran catcher launched his 11th home run of the season in the second inning, marking the 314th of his illustrious career. The blast leaves him just three home runs shy of tying the legendary George Brett for the most in Royals history.
Sánchez Shelled Early
The story of the night, however, was the shocking collapse of Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez. The 29-year-old entered the game boasting a stellar 2.00 ERA but was chased after just 3 1/3 innings. Sánchez (10-4) yielded a staggering 12 hits, walked one, struck out one, and surrendered nine earned runs—surpassing his previous career high of seven. His season ERA ballooned from 2.00 to 2.62 in a matter of innings.
The damage began instantly in the bottom of the first. After Bobby Witt Jr. crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice following a failed double-play attempt by Philadelphia, the Royals strung together three consecutive singles. Luke Maile then provided the loudest exclamation point of the frame, launching a three-run homer in his very first at-bat of the season to put KC up 6-1.
Cameron Navigates Traffic; Schwarber Tossed
While the Royals offense stole the show, left-hander Noah Cameron (5-6) earned the victory with a gritty performance. Cameron allowed just one run on six hits over five innings. Though he battled command issues—issuing five walks alongside seven strikeouts—he repeatedly escaped damage. The Phillies managed to put at least one baserunner on in every single inning but went entirely flat after scoring their lone run in the top of the first.
Frustrations boiled over for Philadelphia in the sixth inning. Star designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who currently leads the Major Leagues with 30 home runs, was swiftly ejected by the home plate umpire after arguing a checked-swing call that resulted in his third strikeout of the evening. It was Schwarber’s first ejection of the season.
Up Next
The Royals will look to carry this massive offensive momentum onto the road. Right-hander Seth Lugo (3-6, 4.20 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound as Kansas City opens up a fresh series in New York against the Mets on Tuesday night. The Mets have yet to name a starting pitcher.
