SEDGWICK COUNTY, KS — Wichita police officers seized nine firearms, including one that was previously reported stolen, after responding to a chaotic disturbance at a short-term rental property late Monday night.
At approximately 11:16 p.m. on June 8, authorities were dispatched to a residence in the 11300 block of West Bekemeyer following reports of a large fight involving weapons. The initial caller estimated that between 50 and 60 people were attending the gathering and that multiple individuals were armed.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a mass exodus of teenagers fleeing the neighborhood. Police identified 33 attendees at the scene, ranging in age from 16 to 21 years old. Several individuals showed visible signs of intoxication, resulting in the arrest of three minors for the possession or consumption of alcohol.
The homeowner, who was not present during the incident, co-operated fully with law enforcement upon arriving at the scene. According to officials, the owner had no prior knowledge of the event and immediately removed the party’s organizers from the property.
A subsequent search of the residence uncovered nine firearms left inside. Investigators confirmed that one of the recovered handguns had been reported stolen during a Wichita burglary earlier this year on February 18, 2026.
The investigation into the incident remains active.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan emphasized that the swift intervention likely averted a much worse outcome, noting that the department is taking a highly proactive approach to large summer gatherings to curb violent crime.
