WICHITA, Kan. — A 38-year-old Wichita man is in custody following a high-stakes, two-county police pursuit that began Monday afternoon after the suspect allegedly rammed a sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle to escape arrest.
According to a media release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began just after noon in the 1900 block of W. MacArthur in Wichita. Deputies assigned to the Property Crimes Reduction Task Force identified the suspect, who had outstanding felony warrants, and attempted to execute an arrest.
Instead of surrendering, the suspect threw his pickup truck into reverse, backing directly into a deputy’s patrol vehicle before speeding away from the scene. Fortunately, the deputy involved was not injured.
The suspect’s attempt to evade law enforcement quickly expanded across county lines, prompting a massive, coordinated response from multiple agencies. The Kansas Highway Patrol deployed air support, allowing troopers to maintain constant visual contact with the fleeing pickup as it tore through northeast Sedgwick County and crossed into neighboring Butler County.
Ground units from the Wichita Police Department, Bel Aire Police Department, and Kechi Police Department joined forces with Kansas Highway Patrol troopers to intercept the vehicle. The multi-agency net tightened in Butler County, where the 38-year-old suspect was successfully stopped and taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities revealed that two other individuals were inside the pickup truck during the chase. Both passengers were detained at the scene and are currently being interviewed by detectives to determine their involvement.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the suspect’s identity or a formal list of the charges he will face. The investigation remains active.
