CONCORDIA, KS — The Cloud County Jail is officially back up and running. Over the weekend, the Cloud County Sheriff’s Department announced that the local detention facility has reopened and resumed normal daily operations following a six-month temporary closure.
The jail officially welcomed back staff and inmates on Friday, June 5, concluding a suspension that began at the end of last year.
“Our staff has undergone a lot of training to prepare for our reopening,” the Cloud County Sheriff’s Department shared in a social media update. “We are still hiring for corrections officers, but are close to being fully staffed.”
The facility’s operational pause originally began on December 31, 2025, when Cloud County Sheriff Ken Davis announced a temporary suspension of housing operations due to critical staffing shortages.
Throughout the six-month hiatus, the jail remained functional as an intake center. Arrestees brought in by local law enforcement were still booked and processed at the Cloud County facility, but they had to be immediately transferred to jails in surrounding counties to be housed.
“We appreciate the patience of the community and the assistance of our surrounding agencies during this time,” the department stated.
While the jail is close to its ideal employment numbers, recruitment efforts for corrections officers remain ongoing.
