Upon arrival, emergency crews attempted to establish contact with the man via telephone but were unsuccessful. Seeking to assess the situation and confirm the man’s location, officers approached the residence on foot.
According to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses, the situation escalated rapidly when an officer spotted the man sitting inside a vehicle parked at the property.
“As the officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, a shot was fired from inside the vehicle,” Moses stated during a press briefing. “The officer then fired his weapon at the vehicle as he took cover.”

Officers immediately transitioned to life-saving measures; however, the 27-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. No Wichita Police officers sustained injuries during the exchange.
Per standard protocol for incidents involving the discharge of a service weapon, the Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) was activated. To ensure an impartial review, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead on the investigation.
Further details regarding the identity of the deceased and the specific number of rounds fired have not yet been released.
