PHILLIPS COUNTY, Kan. — A single-vehicle accident late Tuesday evening claimed the life of a Long Island, Kansas resident, state authorities report.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), the crash occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on Kansas Highway 383, approximately one and a half miles northeast of Long Island.
Investigators state that 36-year-old Cagal Acua was driving eastbound in a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban when the vehicle drifted off the north side of the roadway. Acua reportedly overcorrected, causing the SUV to cross back over the highway, travel off the road to the south, and overturn.
Acua, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled.
Emergency responders pronounced Acua dead at the scene. The victim was subsequently transported to the Olliff-Boeve Funeral Home. No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the accident.
