Inmate Dies at Hutchinson Correctional Facility

HUTCHINSON, KS – Chancellor Copenhaver, a 33-year-old inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

Correctional staff discovered Copenhaver unresponsive in his cell and immediately initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Copenhaver was serving a 121-month sentence for convictions related to attempted murder, kidnapping, assault, burglary, and stalking in Riley County.

As standard procedure, the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation will conduct a joint investigation into the inmate’s death. An independent autopsy will determine the cause of death.
