Multi-Agency Standoff in Wamego Ends with Suspect in Custody

WAMEGO, KS — A tense, nearly 32-hour standoff in a Wamego neighborhood reached a peaceful conclusion Tuesday night after local and federal law enforcement successfully took a wanted suspect into custody.

The incident began at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, in the 600 block of Ash Street. According to a statement released by Gabby Jensen with the City of Wamego, the Wamego Police Department (WPD) tracked a suspect with multiple active warrants out of Riley County to a residence in the area.

A Coordinated Response

Due to the suspect’s known history of fleeing from law enforcement, Wamego authorities opted for a high-caution approach. To ensure the arrest was handled in a “safe and controlled manner,” the WPD called in a massive wave of reinforcements, including:

  • Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office
  • Riley County Police Department
  • Kansas Highway Patrol
  • U.S. Marshals Service

Upon the initial arrival of officers on Monday, several other individuals who were inside the home exited the building without incident. However, the primary suspect remained barricaded inside, leading to an overnight stalemate.

Resolution and Public Safety

The standoff finally ended around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, when WPD officers took the suspect into custody without further incident or injury.

Wamego Police Chief Dale Burton emphasized that the scale of the response was necessary to protect the community.

“The Wamego Police Department takes public safety very seriously,” Chief Burton stated. “When we have a felon barricading themselves in a home in Wamego, we will use all the assets that we have available to us to keep our public safe.”

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been officially released, is expected to face charges related to the existing Riley County warrants in addition to potential new charges stemming from the standoff.
