HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — An hours-long standoff ended peacefully Sunday morning after an armed man who barricaded himself inside a south Newton residence during a domestic violence investigation was taken into custody by local authorities.
The incident began between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. when the Newton Police Department responded to reports of an armed, barricaded suspect near Summer Drive and Old Main Street. As officers arrived, the active scene centered near the intersection of Old Main Street and 24th Street.
Authorities quickly confirmed that the victim in the domestic violence case was safe and secure. While officers worked on the ground to negotiate a peaceful resolution, investigators secured arrest warrants for the suspect.
During the multi-hour response, police cordoned off the surrounding neighborhood and closed the intersection of Old Main Street and 24th Street to all traffic. Depending on their proximity to the scene, nearby residents were either instructed to shelter in place or assisted in safely evacuating the neighborhood.
After an extended response focused on public safety, officers took the suspect into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported, and officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The neighborhood has since been reopened, and normal traffic flow has resumed.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s identity or specific details surrounding the domestic violence charges. The case remains under active investigation by the Newton Police Department.
