TOPEKA, KS – The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) is reporting a troubling trend of drivers, including teenagers, traveling at alarmingly high speeds across the state. Over the weekend, troopers conducted multiple traffic stops involving drivers exceeding triple-digit speeds.
One particularly concerning incident involved a 17-year-old driver clocked at 110 mph. KHP Trooper Tod Heilman, who conducted the stop, issued a stern reminder to young drivers: “When you’re 17 and trying to make it home before curfew and you’re running late, call your parents and explain, they would rather you make it home safe!” The KHP did not release the location of this traffic stop.
In a separate incident, a driver was stopped on K-96 for traveling 109 mph, a staggering 44 mph over the posted speed limit. The KHP emphasized the dangers of such reckless behavior in a social media post, stating, “Remember, no matter where you’re headed, it’s more important to get there safely than on time. Speeding doesn’t just endanger you; it endangers everyone else on the road as well. Help us keep you and your loved ones safe by slowing down!”
The KHP’s increased vigilance comes as they observe a rise in excessive speeding incidents statewide. Law enforcement officials are urging drivers to prioritize safety over speed and to adhere to posted speed limits. They are reminding the public that speeding is a leading cause of traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
