Christian Vazquez ignited a late-game comeback for the Minnesota Twins as they defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday afternoon. In the ninth inning, Vazquez connected with a 1-2 pitch, sending it down the left-field line and bringing home Ryan Jeffers to break the 1-1 tie. The Twins continued their offensive surge with Alex Kirilloff’s sacrifice fly and Byron Buxton’s two-run double, resulting in a four-run inning against Will Smith (0-1). Pitcher Griffin Jax (1-0) contributed a scoreless eighth inning to secure the victory. The Twins’ bullpen performed admirably, allowing only two hits in the final 3 2/3 innings, while the Royals’ relievers struggled, giving up five hits, five runs, and two walks in three innings.
The game started with Minnesota’s Joe Ryan displaying a flawless performance for the first three innings. Witt continued his impressive performance with another double in the sixth inning, marking his third double of the season. Ryan was then replaced by a reliever after pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out five.
The Royals took the lead in the sixth inning when MJ Melendez hit a single through the left side off reliever Steven Okert, bringing Witt home. This was Kansas City’s first hit with runners in scoring position after going 0-for-6 in their previous game against the Twins. Royals’ starter Seth Lugo initially struggled with his four-seam fastball but adjusted his strategy to focus on off-speed deliveries.
