Poetry Celebration To Open at Art Center

April is National Poetry Month. To commemorate the occasion, the Marshall County Arts Cooperative is hosting “Poetry Celebration” at the Lee Dam Center for Fine Art, Marysville, from Sunday, April 16, until Sunday, April 23.

The two-week exhibition features the original poetry of local writers; more than forty poems will be on display.

The art center is open Sundays from 12-3 p.m.; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.; and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m.

As part of the exhibition, Traci Brimhall, Kansas’ poet laureate, will give a free poetry reading Wednesday, April 19, at 6 p.m.

A professor of English at Kansas State University, Brimhall has written four poetry collections, including her 2020 work, “Come the Slumberless to the Land of Nod.”

As the state’s poet laureate, Brimhall travels the state as an arts ambassador presenting readings and discussing poetry in communities all over Kansas.

Brimhall said she has a great passion for poetry and loves sharing that passion with others.

“I like talking about poetry to people,” Brimhall said. “I love talking about the importance of language and poetry.”

Brimhall earned a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate from Western Michigan University. She is in her ninth year teaching at K-State.

Refreshments will be served at the reading.
