JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — A Junction City Police Department K-9 officer died of heat exposure on Monday, prompting an independent state investigation and the suspension of the dog’s handler, officials announced.
According to a department press release, K-9 Police Service Dog (PSD) Vethos was found unresponsive inside a patrol vehicle on Monday, July 6, 2026. Preliminary findings indicate the Belgian Malinois’s cause of death was heat exposure.
On Tuesday, the Junction City Police Department (JCPD) requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) step in to conduct an independent, third-party probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“JCPD will cooperate fully with this investigation,” the department stated.
Per departmental policy, Vethos’ handler—whose identity has not been publicly released—has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the KBI investigation.
A Heartbroken Department
The news followed an initial, somber announcement from the department on Monday, before the cause of death had been determined. At the time, JCPD asked the community for support while they mourned “the line-of-duty death of a beloved K-9 officer.”
Vethos, a Belgian Malinois, joined the JCPD in 2024 and was assigned to the Investigations Division alongside his partner.
“Vethos was more than a working dog,” the department said in its statement. “He was a protector, a teammate, and a member of the JCPD family. His loss continues to be felt deeply across JCPD and the City.”
The department concluded its initial press release with a final tribute to the fallen canine: “Rest easy, Vethos. We have the watch from here. End of Watch: July 6, 2026.”
