The Kansas Historical Society encourages visitors to take advantage of the final week of the 2026 season to experience seven of our state historic sites that are not open year-round.
These sites offer opportunities to explore Kansas history, from the state’s territorial beginnings and westward expansion to the Civil War, Native American history and the lives of influential Kansans.
The seven sites closing for the season are:
- Fort Riley – First Territorial Capitol State Historic Site
- Kansas City – Grinter Place State Historic Site
- Hanover – Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site
- Pleasanton – Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield State Historic Site
- Republic – Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site
- Emporia – Red Rocks State Historic Site
- Studley – Cottonwood Ranch State Historic Site
Each of these state historic sites offers a different window into Kansas history, and we encourage everyone to make plans now for a final visit before these sites close for the season at the end of the business day on October 4. The sites will reopen in April of next year for the 2027 season, but tours can be scheduled in the off season by contacting the site directly.
