A K-9 officer, Vethos, from the Junction City Police Department died from heat exposure while left in a patrol vehicle. Following this incident, the department requested an independent investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and placed the dog's handler on administrative leave. Vethos joined the department in 2024 and was deeply cherished.

On July 15, 2025, a Kansas Game Warden and K-9 Kai successfully rescued a missing elderly woman amidst extreme heat. Responding to a request for assistance, K-9 Kai quickly located her in a remote area. After giving her water, she was cared for by EMS. The incident emphasized the importance of K-9 units in emergencies.
