HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 49-year-old Hutchinson man was taken into custody late Tuesday night following a tense series of events that began with a confrontation near a local apartment complex and ended with shots fired at law enforcement, according to the Hutchinson Police Department.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
According to police reports, the situation unfolded just before 9:00 p.m. Tuesday when Jesse Taylor approached an officer sitting in a parked patrol vehicle in the 1400 block of East 11th Avenue. Authorities noted that Taylor had visible blood on him, stated that he had a firearm, and displayed the weapon.
When the officer issued verbal commands, Taylor fled on foot toward the nearby Porter Commons Apartments at 1415 Katie Drive.
A second officer located Taylor in the apartment complex’s parking lot. As the officer gave commands, Taylor fired a handgun, striking an unoccupied vehicle parked nearby. The officer took cover while Taylor fled the immediate area. Law enforcement officers quickly secured the perimeter, located Taylor shortly afterward, and safely took him into custody. A firearm and a knife were recovered near the arrest site.
During a subsequent search of Taylor’s residence, investigators made a grim discovery: a dead dog bearing lacerations and apparent gunshot wounds.
Taylor is facing multiple severe preliminary charges, which include:
- Attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer
- Two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
- Malicious killing of an animal
- Felony interference
- Criminal damage
- Unlawful discharge of a firearm
Police emphasized that these allegations have not yet been proven in a court of law. The investigation remains ongoing.
