Freshman Duo Shines as No. 14 Kansas Triumphs in Allen Fieldhouse Milestone

LAWRENCE, Kan. – On a historic Saturday that saw the Phog celebrate its 1,000th game, the youth movement took center stage. Behind career performances from freshmen Bryson Tiller and Darryn Peterson, No. 14 Kansas held off a late surge from No. 13 BYU to secure a 90-82 victory.

The win served as a fitting tribute to Allen Fieldhouse, moving the Jayhawks to an incredible 878-122 all-time record in the building. The festivities began early with Kansas hosting ESPN’s College GameDay for the 13th time, a showcase that clearly fueled a dominant first-half performance.

A Tale of Two Halves

The Jayhawks came out “on fire,” heading into the locker room with a 20-point cushion. Kansas shot a blistering 64.3% from the field in the first half, punctuated by a 9-of-12 clinic from three-point range.

  • Bryson Tiller: Led the way with a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds.
  • Darryn Peterson: Provided an efficient spark, netting 18 points in just 20 minutes of action.

Defensively, the Jayhawks neutralized BYU’s star freshman AJ Dybantsa early. The nation’s leading scorer didn’t even attempt a shot until midway through the first half and was held scoreless until a late three-pointer ended a 13-0 Kansas run. Dybantsa finished with 17 points, well below his season average.

Withstanding the Rally

Despite trailing by as many as 21, the Cougars refused to fade. Led by a career-high 33 points from Richie Saunders, who buried six triples, BYU clawed back to within six points with less than two minutes remaining. However, Kansas regained their composure, outscoring BYU 8-4 in the final minute to seal the win.
