LAWRENCE, KS – Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self had two stents inserted into his heart on Thursday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after experiencing “unwell and concerning symptoms,” the Kansas athletic department announced.
The procedure, performed to treat blocked arteries, “went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery,” according to a statement released by the university. Self is reportedly “in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”
The 62-year-old coach, who is preparing for his 23rd season at the helm of the Jayhawks, had directed the final practice of the summer session just hours before his hospitalization.
This marks the second time in recent years that Self has undergone a heart procedure. He previously missed the 2023 Big 12 and NCAA tournaments due to a heart condition, which also involved a standard catheterization and the insertion of two stents to address blocked arteries.
Self, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, has led Kansas to two national championships in 2008 and 2022, and is the winningest coach in school history.
