Second Heat Burst Jolts Kansas, Temperatures Soar Overnight

Dodge City, KS – Kansas has experienced its second “heat burst” this week, with residents in Dodge City waking up to an unseasonable spike in temperatures early Friday morning. The National Weather Service reported a rapid increase in temperature at their Dodge City airport office, marking the second such phenomenon in the state this week.

At 12:08 a.m. Friday, the temperature at the Dodge City airport was a mild 77 degrees Fahrenheit. However, just nine minutes later, at 12:17 a.m., the mercury dramatically rose to 91 degrees Fahrenheit, a jump of 14 degrees.

This latest incident follows a similar, though slightly less intense, heat burst reported on Wednesday in Sublette, Haskell County. In that event, temperatures soared from 67 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit at approximately 3 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service, both heat bursts were attributed to a southward-moving storm line that passed through the respective regions. Heat bursts are localized, sudden increases in temperature and decreases in humidity, often associated with decaying thunderstorms. As a storm collapses, downdrafts can push warm, dry air from higher altitudes down to the surface, leading to these swift and significant temperature changes.

While unusual, these events highlight the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of atmospheric conditions, even in the absence of severe weather. Residents are advised to stay informed about local weather advisories.
