Flood Watch Issued for Portions of East Central and Northeast Kansas

TOPEKA, KS – June 2, 2025 – The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a Flood Watch for portions of east central and northeast Kansas, effective from Tuesday morning, June 3rd, through Wednesday morning, June 4th. The watch indicates that flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible across the region.

Counties included in the Flood Watch are Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Lyon, Morris, Osage, Shawnee, Wabaunsee in east central Kansas, and Brown, Jackson, Jefferson, Nemaha, and Pottawatomie in northeast Kansas.

Cities within the watch area include Council Grove, Maple Hill, Topeka, Alta Vista, Grantville, McLouth, Oskaloosa, Perry, Seneca, Hiawatha, Meriden, Valley Falls, Lyndon, Ottawa, Burlington, Garnett, Eskridge, Nortonville, Lawrence, St. Marys, Osage City, Overbrook, Carbondale, McFarland, Paxico, Horton, Alma, Holton, Wamego, Harveyville, Burlingame, Sabetha, Emporia, and Lebo.

Forecasters warn that thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday, with rainfall rates potentially exceeding an inch per hour. The primary concern is the possibility of “training storms,” where multiple thunderstorms develop and track over the same areas, leading to significant accumulation of rain. This elevated rainfall rate and potential for repeated storms over the same locations increases the risk of flooding.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor later forecasts and be prepared for the possibility of Flood Warnings being issued. Those living in low-lying areas or locations prone to flooding should be prepared to take action if flooding develops. Excessive runoff could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.
